Can Chewing Gum Improve Your Jawline?

You may have heard that chewing gum is an easy way to improve your jawline and general facial aesthetics, but is that really the case?

As it turns out, chewing gum is actually a viable workout for your lower facial muscles. This means that chewing gum can actually help you build a stronger, more masculine jawline.

In this article, we’re going to dive into the topic in more depth and find out how chewing gum can really improve your jawline, how to chew gum for this purpose, and which gum you should choose!

Can Chewing Gum Actually Build Your Jawline?

Let’s start off with the most obvious question: can chewing gum improve your jawline? If so, how?

In principle, the idea is sound. After all, you can train almost all of the muscles on your body, so why would the lower facial muscles be any different? Indeed, chewing (technically referring as mastication) trains your lower facial muscles, and so by chewing gum, you should be able to build your lower facial muscles for a more muscular, defined jawline.

But does chewing gum really work for improving your jawline?

Unfortunately, just like with mewing, there’s very little conclusive evidence on whether chewing gum can improve your jawline. However, there are a few notable studies and personal examples that do hold some weight.

The most relevant piece of evidence in favor of chewing gum is this study, which showed that chewing can indeed cause hypertrophy, or muscular growth, of the masseter. The masseter is the chewing muscle behind your cheekbone on either side of your face. If you hold your fingers against your cheek, just in front of your ear, you can actually feel the masseter muscle tense up when you clench your jaw.

There’s no doubt that by training the masseter, you will build a more muscular jaw. Of course, you need to be realistic about what that means. Your jaw will most likely become bigger, squarer, and more defined. It probably won’t, however, magically look slimmer.

Beyond that single study, there’s not a whole lot of evidence that points specifically to chewing gum as a way to improve facial aesthetics. Interestingly, WikiHow lists chewing gum in its article How to Get a Chiseled Jawline. Unfortunately, the source that WikiHow supplies for that claim is an obscure blog, which itself doesn’t include any sources.

The only other case study is this strange story from China, where a woman excessively chewed gum in the hopes of losing weight. After about six months, her colleagues commented she’d developed a square, masculine face. This example really helps illustrate what you should expect from chewing gum: it will most definitely work your jaw muscles (in particular, the masseter), but that isn’t guaranteed to create your desired aesthetic.

How to Chew Gum for Your Jawline

Since there’s little research on the effects of chewing gum on the jawline, it’s hard to know exactly what approach you should take. With that said, I do have some general advice if you want to try this out for yourself.

Let’s start off with some of the key pointers you’re going to need to know if you’re going to try chew gum to improve your facial aesthetics:

  • Make sure to chew on both sides of your mouth evenly. This prevents your jaw muscles from developing unevenly, and thus causing facial asymmetry
  • Don’t overdo it: excessive chewing has been shown to cause temporomandibular joint dysfunction. An hour or two of chewing is probably okay, but chewing all day should be avoided
  • Use hard, sugar-free gum. The added hardness ensures your jaw muscles get a good workout and the lack of sugar prevents tooth decay.

Other than that, it’s up to you to decide what approach to take. Many individuals have seen success themselves just by chewing gum for an hour a day (in total) across a period of several months. As far as I’m concerned, this seems like a sensible approach — it definitely shouldn’t cause any harm.

So, next time you’re at work or studying for school, simply throw in a piece of chewing gum and do a 30 minute workout on each side!

Best Chewing Gums for Face Gains

If you want to get the most out of chewing gum for your face gains, then it’s crucial that you use the right gum. In our ideal gum, we’re looking for two things:

  • No sugar (to save our teeth)
  • Hardness (to give our jaw a good workout)

For these two criteria, there’s one gum that stands out above all others — and it’s the same gum many users in self-improvement forums use. That’s Falim brand chewing gum.

This chewing gum is the cream of the crop when it comes to building your jaw. Sugar free and extra strong.

Alternatives to Chewing Gum

You might be wondering if there are any alternatives to chewing gum when it comes to improving your jawline and general facial aesthetics. The first thing that comes to mind is the Jawzrsize, a facial exerciser which you’re effectively supposed to chew.

There are other facial exercisers, like the Facial Flex, but I think the Jawzrsize is the most interesting of them all, since using it directly mimics the same muscle contractions as chewing gum. As a result, you practically get all the same benefits of chewing gum.

Final Thoughts

As you’ve seen, chewing gum can actually make a difference to your facial appearance! After all, it’s been shown to work your masseter muscle, which naturally creates a more muscular, masculine face shape. Of course, you need to be realistic with your expectations.
